You Can Buy Australia’s Most Famous Ford Muscle Car In The US

  • This 1978 Ford Falcon XC Cobra features a 302 V8 engine producing 202 hp.
  • Just 400 examples of the Aussie muscle car were built, and this one is #349.
  • Imported to the US in 2003, it has about 75,000 miles and remains pristine.

Australia’s car industry may have collapsed a few years back, but once upon a time, the Land Down Under produced some incredible performance cars, the likes of which only the Americans could match. The Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon were the nation’s petrolheads’ favorites for decades, and while production has long since ceased, their appeal seems to have only increased.

What you’re looking at is a Ford Falcon XC Cobra 302 from 1978, and it is one of the finest Aussie muscle cars from this era. It has lived most of its life in Australia, but in 2003, it was imported into the United States and currently resides in Granite Falls, Washington.

Limited-Edition Icon

Ford only ever built 400 examples of the XC Cobra and each is individually numbered. This one is #349. The Blue Oval was inspired to create this special edition Falcon when famous local racing drivers Allan Moffat and Colin Bond finished in first and second place at the 1977 Bathurst 1000 endurance race. The XC Cobra marked the end of an era for the Falcon two-door, with each model finished in the same Sno White and accented with Bold Blue. It’s a look that’s hard to forget.

Under the Hood

Out of the 400 XC Cobras, 200 were fitted with the 5.8-liter 351 Cleveland V8, producing 217 hp, while the other 200 received the smaller 4.9-liter 302 Cleveland V8, each available in both automatic and manual transmission options.

The example up for sale on Bring a Trailer features the 302 V8, complete with an Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor, a Performer intake manifold, an aftermarket camshaft, and new exhaust headers. When it first rolled off the assembly line, it churned out a modest 202 hp (151 kW) and 268 lb-ft (364 Nm) of torque. While those figures are a far cry from today’s performance standards, there’s nothing quite like having a thumping V8 under your right foot waiting to be unleashed.

A look at the car’s odometer reveals it has ~121,000 km (about 75,000 miles) on the clock, but you’d never guess just by looking at it. The exterior is pristine, the cabin seems great, and the black and blue cloth adorning the seats looks excellent.

If an eye-catching two-door Ford Falcon like this tickles your fancy, head over to Bring a Trailer to check out the listing here. But don’t dilly-dally—there’s less than a day left in the auction, and as of now, the highest bid is sitting at $45,500.
